Why an ICT teacher built his own class instead of joining an existing one
ICT Campus is taught by Dr. Yasas Sri Wickramasinghe, a Senior Lecturer in New Zealand and Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the HIT Lab NZ, University of Canterbury, where he completed his PhD in Human Interface Technology. Before academia, he spent five years as a tech lead in industry — including at Sony and Niantic — and taught at the University of Moratuwa, where he built Sri Lanka's first large-scale MOOC platform. "Every A/L ICT class I looked at was solving for the same thing — get through the syllabus before the exam," Dr. Wickramasinghe said. "That's necessary, but it's not the same as understanding it. I wanted a class where a student could see exactly which competency they're weak on, drill that competency specifically, and get evidence — a mock score, a leaderboard rank, a completed simulation — that it actually improved. That's a data and interface design problem as much as a teaching one, and it happens to be what I do research on."
